Use Your Pans For More Than Just Cakes
Most cooks have a large collection of pans. In virtually any kitchen you will find rectangular ones, round ones, and square ones. Many times, these pans get regulated to just cakes. However, there are many more uses for these pans on an everyday basis.
A fluted, center post bundt cake pan is similar in many ways to those used for decades to bake angel food cakes. Bundt pans, and bundt cake recipes, became extremely popular during the sixties. These special pans are often used for much more than an occasional cake, however. When used to bake bread, they produce a bread with a different crust than if a bread pan were used to bake the same dough. The pan can be used to cook a meat loaf that appears much more enticing than normal. It can also create a gelatin dessert that appears to have taken much more time than it truly did.
Square cake pans are just right for numerous uses. They can be used to bake biscuits or cinnamon rolls. Most of the complete box dinners that are basically just pour and bake fit well in these pans. A square pan is also useful when making fudge, as it is about the perfect size to hold a cooling batch. It saves space in the refrigerator when you need to cool down a dish before serving, such as a macaroni salad.
A rectangular cake pan can do far more than make a simple to frost cake. It is the right size for many casserole dishes, such as a tuna casserole or enchilada casserole. With a lid, it can offer an airtight container to chill devilled eggs before transferring them to a fancy egg plate. It also can work when baking a meat loaf. They work well for a chicken with rice dish, lasagna, or a small pot roast.
Pans in specialty shapes such as animals or cartoons can become unique gelatin molds. They can also bake corn bread or mold candy. Almost anything that can be spread evenly in the pan before you bake or cool it can be turned into a fun treat.
If you are going to make a layer cake, you will need round pans. But they can also hold a deep dish pot pie or a box of dehydrated potatoes. Rather than taking up oven space with a baking sheet, you can bake at least six rolls in a round pan.
There is no need to save pans exclusively for baking cakes. Often, these pans are some of the best quality items the cook owns. With a little imagination, they can be put to many more uses than just holding cake batter.
