Proofing Bread Dough - Art Or Science?
Many of us may have had at one time experienced a few errors when baking bread at home. After all, the process of making bread at home seems to be a process of trial and error to bake that perfect loaf of bread.
Is Bread Making an Art or a Science?
Making bread is both an art and a science. Baking is a creative activity that is enjoyed by many people around the world. Though serious bakers amongst us would agree that it takes discipline and effort to make good bread consistently.
The process of bread making is not a complex one, but the steps in the process have to be followed carefully. Whether you are kneading dough to make in your oven, or using your bread making machine, a certain degree of care is required to follow the process.
Proofing Bread Dough
Proofing bread dough is about taking adequate time to left the dough rise properly. Be patient to allow the bread to proof. It usually takes two proofs to let the dough rise. Firstly, in a bowl that is covered with something like a slightly damp towel. And then secondly, by placing the dough in the bread pan for its second proof. Between the proofings, the work of punching the dough is also needed.
Using Your Bread Making Machine
If you use a bread machine, things are much simpler in terms of proofing, though you still have to check that you measure out the ingredients carefully, and place them into the bread pan in the right order. Cooking disasters happen for a reason, and sometimes we play the character of the mad scientist in a laboratory trying to work out where we have gone wrong!
One error could turn out a disastrous loaf of bread being baked. {But alas, But then,} there is always another week to create another beautifully made loaf!
It's All in the Measuring
So the next time that you decide to make your next loaf of bread, pay careful attention to measure out your ingredients properly. It could make all the difference between making an outstanding loaf of bread versus a disaster.
Adding Ingredients in the Correct Order
Read the recipe carefully and take note of the correct order in which ingredients are to be placed into the pan. Certain ingredients do not mix well and attention needs to be taken to avoid placing these ingredients together. For example, salt and yeast if placed together can interact in an undesirable way.
If making your loaf by hand, proof your bread correctly for the recommended number of times at the right intervals so that the dough will rise properly. Proofing bread dough is an important skill if you want to be a proficient baker.
Have fun making bread at home. As the quote goes practice makes perfect!
