Carnival Glass
The Fenton Art Glass business was formed in 1905 by two brothers, Frank L and John W Fenton, who took over an old glassworks factory inside the town of Martin's Ferry within the state of Ohio having a view to making the finest Art Glass inside the US. To complete this they initially designed designs on blank pieces of glass from rival glass makers, being unable to make their very own at the time. Ultimately they had been able to commence producing their own, becoming unable to purchase the glass they required elsewhere. The Fenton Glass business then moved to Williamstown, just across the Ohio river into Virginia. Here they constructed a brand new Fenton Glass factory and began producing their personal glass once more here in 1908.
Of the two brothers, the designer and decorator was Frank L, whilst John W took care of the business side of things. Much is said of the intial designs the brothers came up with for their Fenton Glass pieces, particularly that their influences took in such luminaries as Tiffany along with a lesser known company, Steuben. Their distinctive and gorgeous colours are thanks to an incredible glass chemist known as Jacob Rosenthal, who is credited using the creation of chocolate and golden agate types of glass.
FACT 1:
It is pressed glass that comes in about 2,000 different patterns. Following removal from the mold, it really is coated with metallic salts and then re-fired giving it an oil-like rainbow iridescent sheen. It is an American invention, very first introduced in 1903.
FACT 2:
Carnival glass is typically listed in identification books by its pattern and then by manufacturer.
FACT 3:
The highly collectible carnival glass is created in an remarkable variety of patterns, geometric and naturalistic, formed in a mold and then hand completed and decorated. It was an affordable pressed glass to manufacture. It was pressed, then shaped (crimps, ruffles, flared edges, etc.) and will be the artistic glassware which was mass produced from 1907 by means of to 1925. This line is referred to as vintage.
FACT 4:
Carnival glass pieces in black have the highest value, closely followed by the blue, due to the reality that these colors are considerably harder to find. Black amethyst is a rare color; there have been extremely few pieces made, some individuals consider the black amethyst itself was an accident.
The Fenton Brothers are now credited with the creation of their most popular works, the Fenton Carnival Glass. Later, resulting from a change within the globe market, Fenton began selling more domestic items, which includes Fenton Hobnail glass works, including perfume bottles, and moved on to making use of the hobnail pattern in their Fenton Hobnail Milk Glass items, a hugely popular item that catapulted Fenton into the massive leagues, and ensured a continued revenue for the company.
FACT 5:
Fenton carnival glass is deemed to be the most popular among all. It first introduced its Carnival Art glass to the public with an article in a trade magazine in October 1907.
