A COLOURFUL VALENTINE'S DAY IS IN GOOD TASTE
Don't see red on Valentine's Day.
Red may be the colour of love and of romance and passion, but isn't it true that love is (colour) blind ? Let your imagination fly this February and put a little colour – and a lot of love – into making it a day to remember.
Think pink.Ever thought about creating a pink culinary masterpiece?Slices of smoked salmon or trout on thin slices of lightly buttered brown bread can be cut into heart shapes with a cookie cutter.Perhaps tiny pastry cases with a pink prawn and some delicate mayonnaise dressing would do the trick ?Add pink food colouring to mashed potato and create heart shapes on white plates, topped with gorgeous grilled salmon, followed by Heart Shaped meringue baskets filled with pink whipped cream and hulled strawberries . Elegant pink sparkling wine would be a perfect mood enhancer.
Mellow yellow.How about a tall glass of sparkling champagne and fresh Orange Juice to go with some magnificent mango mousse ?Or make it a romantic start with eggs benedict on a bed of golden hollandaise sauce?
Or go back to black with a platter of fresh-from-the-sea oysters and caviar served with stout and champagne.
If you're keen to go green, try a lighter-than-air avocado mousse or fresh asparagus with melted butter, and serve with a shot of ice-cold apple sours.Green spinach noodles with basil pesto could be the perfect mains, followed by mint sorbet sprinkled with pistachio nuts.

It's true that some of the romance of Valentine's Day has been lost in all the frenetic commercial activity around the day - gifts, cards, balloons, chocolates etc. Restaurants will be over-booked and probably over-charging.But if you want to declare your love, or just show you care, the sincerity of a home-cooked meal with gorgeous flowers and accessories to elevate the evening will be a sure winner.
