Types Of Screwdrivers - ToolsRUs
To turn different kinds of screw, you need to use the right mating tool for the job, a screwdriver. Screwdrivers feature a basic design comprised of steel shaft fitted with a particular type of driver head and a handle with which to grip the tool. This extremely common tool comes in many sizes, in different lengths and with one of several types of driver heads designed to mate with a particular type of screw They give the operator the mechanical advantage necessary to apply torque or rotational force to a fastener or some other type of machine element. Screwdrivers come in manual, electric and battery-powered varieties.
Screwdriver heads are designed to match with the specifications of a particular type of screw, both in terms of size and drive head style. The tip of the screwdriver is machined into a certain shape and serves as the male end, matching precisely with the appropriate drive type in the head of the fastener. The two most common screw heads are slotted and Philips head. Slotted drivers have flat heads that resemble a paddle with a squared-off tip. The width and thickness of the flat tip determines what kinds of screws it can torque. By contrast, Philips head drivers consist of two perpendicular tips that form a perfect cross. Each of the four inner corners are slightly rounded outward, resulting in four equal arcs at the points of intersection.
The square-shaped Robertson head and the Frearson driver - which resembles a Philips head driver, but it is smaller and has no rounded inner corners - are other driver types. Still other screwdriver styles include the mortorq, pozidriv and supadriv varieties. These tools features unique, distinctly shaped heads. When looked at head on, a mortorq driver resembles a pinwheel or fan, with four wing-shaped tips. Nearly identical to the Philips head driver, a pozidriv head includes a second, thinner cross, but rotated 45 degrees relative to the main crossing tips. Likewise, supadriv heads look a lot like Philips heads, but their inner corners are squared off rather than arced.

Magnetic driver heads are commonly used to hold onto the fasteners, making for easier application. The shaft length depends on the tool, with shorter shafts good for easily accessed screws and longer shafts good for hard-to-reach ones.
