Korean Boxwoods: How-To Stop Landscaping Nightmares

Boxwoods are an excellent addition to a formal landscaped garden. They can be sheared and shaped into just about any shape you can imagine. Boxes are excellent, hardy shrubs in gardens that keep their vibrant green all year - even in the bitter cold north. Yes, boxwoods desire some attention and some TLC will be mandatory. Follow these easy steps to maintain beautiful boxwoods year round:

1. Avoid a mix and match boxwood hedge. If you have an existing boxwood hedge it is entirely possible that you will have trouble finding the exact match to what is already there. In that case look for something that has a similar leaf. Just like with flowers, there are a variety of choices and what looks good together can vary, so examine what the nursery has, see what looks good together and make your decisions accordingly. Alternatively you'll get assortment of fast and slow growing boxes with a few being a pale green and others being darker green giving you a hodge-podge end result!

2. When building a new hedge or landscape, do some research to find a good boxwood for your region. Look for a boxwood that is a vigorous grower, drought tolerant and disease resistant. The Korean Boxwood, for example, grows very fast and in the northern climates is isn't prone to disease.

3. Your spring clean-up and maintenance for boxwood's begins with the addition of a 1/2 cup (per plant) of good organic, acidic fertilizer that has compost, peat, some special evergreen nutirents and dehydrated manure, mixed and spread out, around the base of your bushes. You are going to want to maintain good root coverage, so it's good idea to administer fresh soil.

4. Note that boxwood trimming can be fairly simple and there are some things you'll want to know too. Always be sure to let new spring growth harden off before you have your boxes first hair cut of the year and never prune them late in the fall. If you prune in the fall you'll get dead looking spots in the spring. People love to see beautiful bright green boxwoods in the winter and will really frown down on the dead brown. It is always better if they are slightly bushy looking than dead looking.

5. Boxwoods dry out quick because of their shallow root system. With that, never forget to mulch your boxs'. Doing so guards the root system and maintains a moisture retention. Shy away from mulch over-kill as you could very well wind up killing your plants due to bark rot from buried bases. Moderation is the key even in the garden.

6.Keep an eye peeled for diseases and fungus problems on your boxwoods. Generally quite strong and capable, even boxwoods have been know to ocassionaly be overrun by plant illness. Do some reading up on your boxwoods if you have suspicion that the problem is more than simply winter damage. Whether your boxwoods are dealing with a mold problem or an bug infestation, chances are it can be treated with a fungicidal spray or with an oil soap. It would be a good idea to know for certain what toxic sprays you need prior to using them by completly investigating your problemed areas. If all else fails just dig it out and replace the offending bush before it contaminates the rest of your hedge. One plant is inexpensive to replace, an entire hedge gets really expensive.

Enjoy this time of landscaping...boxwoods are really great for landscaping wheather you have a formal or even informal setting.
