Wood Shutters to Accentuate Your Home
Conventional wooden shutters were the standard for as long as we’ve had shutters. Today, fortunately, vinyl and other styles of shutters are often used instead of traditional wood house shutters. The issue that has wooden shutters quickly becoming a thing of the past is that they are very high-maintenance. Many of us today are open to a way to eliminate maintenance around the house. Wooden shutters require repainting or re-staining regularly, even if they are protected from the weather. There are other ways.
Exterior house shutters are usually only used for asthetic purposes and are never closed, unlike in centuries past when shutters were first invented. Shutters used to protect the house from inclement weather a long time ago, before double paned glass. Nowadays, shutters are rarely closed, but do add a finished look to any home.
As we slowly replace our wooden shutters, we can purchase and enjoy the following types of shutters:
Vinyl Shutters
Just as tough as vinly exterior siding, vinyl house shutters need no upkeep and last a lifetime. The only disadvantage with vinyl shutters instead of wood is that they have a tendency to ding if anything is tossed at the shutters. The problem is, they are less durable than wood for blocking rocks, hail or other debris. Many homeowners are willing to live with this because vinyl shutters are attractive, are reasonably priced and maintenance free.
Composite Shutters
These are less expensive shutters which use composite woods and not solid woods. The benefit to composite shutters is that they are resistant to termites and rot and will last a lifetime. They usually come pre-stained and do not require upkeep like solid wood, yet appear the same as real wood. Composite Shutters are a good choice for anyone thinking about maintenance free shutters.
Fiberglass shutters
Fiberglass is sturdy and hard-wearing. Fiberglass is well suited to exterior house shutters and has been used in places where the shutters are actually closed, such as parts of the world that are regularly hit by hurricanes. Fiberglass shutters may cost a bit more money, but they are strong, maintenance free and built to last. They are an excellent choice for anyone living in an area affected by hurricanes for the reason that they can ride the storm out.
Aluminum shutters
Similar to vinyl shutters, aluminum shutters mirror aluminum siding and are a popular option for homeowners. While vinyl came into fashion two decades ago, knocking aluminum out of the running, aluminum shutters suddenly reappeared and are presently very popular among homeowners who want good looking and maintenance free shutters that are sturdy as well.
Whether you are purchasing shutters for the exterior or interior of your home, you are likely to find a wide variety of maintenance free shutters on the market today. The style of house shutters that are best for you will depend upon your budget as well as the primary reason for the shutters. Wood House Shutters can be useful for everything from protecting your house from a hurricane to improving your curb appeal. Find the ones that are right for circumstances.
