EASY TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS

For a beginner, arranging flowers can seem a bit intimidating as there are many different shapes and styles to consider and it’s hard to know where to begin.

Sometimes, even the idea of taking a bunch of flowers that’s been professionally arranged by a florist and popping them into a vase can be a little off-putting.  Sound familiar?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.  By following a few simple rules, you’ll be able to create your own gorgeous masterpiece that will brighten up any room.  Once you’ve conquered the basics, toss the rules away and explore your own creativity.  Practice makes perfect and you’ll gain confidence as you go along.

The basic elements are scale, space, harmony, unity, balance, texture and accent.  If that sounded a bit technical, don’t worry – it will makes sense in time.

First up, choose flowers you love.  You can choose one kind of flower in one colour (monochromatic), varieties that have similar colours or a variety bunch of brightly coloured flowers.  For beginners, it’s probably wise to choose colours that complement each other, eg pink and white, yellow and white.  The idea is to create balance and equilibrium and if there are too many dark flowers, they will overpower the light ones.   Another suggestion is to have an odd number of focal blooms, which can be used as a base for developing the composition.

Before starting out, try and picture your arrangement in your head and visualize it in its setting.  A tall arrangement will look dramatic in a corner location or in a central position whereas a lower, elongated one will be suitable for a table decoration.  For inspiration, you may like to look at interior decorating magazines, books or trawl some websites of local Perth florists before you set off to buy flowers or pick from your garden.

First up, choose a container.  To a large extent, the type of flowers you have chosen will influence what vase you use.  There’s no limit to what you can use – from old tins and jars, bottles, baskets, glasses, jugs, teapots or pedestals.  A basic cylindrical vase is the simplest, a square or rectangular one is more contemporary and a ceramic one will be good for more ‘countrified’ arrangements.  Tall flowers will need a taller vase or pedestal to keep the proportion while a colourful ceramic container will add a fun, informal element.

Start by putting the largest, most eye-catching flowers in the centre of the container.   A general indication is to have the longest stem between one and two times the height of the vase, but it’s really a question of overall balance and effect.  Flowers are then added from the biggest to the smallest, with the foliage or greenery going in at the end.  Flowers can also be inserted deeper into the arrangement to create a sense of depth (as opposed to having them all on the outside).  Fuller flowers generally look better when they are cut a few centimeters above the container, whereas narrower flowers and buds look good when the stems are longer.

Fillers (eg foliage, leaves, flowers) are used to fill the gaps and create height, width and texture.  Filler flowers with small blossoms, small leaves and feathery textures also work well.  The foliage should ideally be at the centre and back of the arrangement in order to keep the balance.

It’s also a good idea to keep stepping back from the arrangement to make sure it looks great at a distance.  Just as an artist would evaluate their work in progress to check on the light, the look, the perspective etc – it’s the same with flower arranging.  Remember, you’re the artist!

So much for the guidelines, there’s only one rule you have to remember and that’s to have FUN!.  And if you’re the lucky recipient of a beautiful bouquet or an arrangement from a florist in Perth, take some time to examine how it’s been constructed and get some ideas from the professionals.
