Luxury Train Travel, From Cape To Cairo
In the Victorian era the railways ruled the world of travel. Each town wanted to have its own station, connecting it to the new world of prosperity promised by the steam engine, and great engineers built thousands of miles of track, especially in Europe and in North America. Continents were crossed by rail - North America first, and then Asia, when the Russians completed the Trans-Siberian Railway. This article describes a modern day train journey, crossing the African continent from South to North. Rovos Rail is a South African company offering an experience-of-a-lifetime trip - luxury train travel from Cape Town to Cairo.
In the Victorian Era the steam powered luxury train railway was one of the inventions which defined the meaning of modernity, progress and prosperity. Many thousands of miles of rail were laid in most developed countries.
The luxury train railway networks were most dense in established industrial nations like Britain, France and Germany, but they also played a role in opening up the interior of countries for development such as in the western states in the US, and in Siberia, which was crossed from West to East by the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Industrialists and financiers such as Cecil Rhodes who were making money in Africa - mostly from gold and diamond mining - believed that the whole continent of Africa would be opened up if a trans-continental railway could be built from South Africa to Egypt. Of course this would also be of massive strategic importance to the British - the Suez Canal and the Cape sea routes between Britain and India would be at either end of the Cape to Cairo rail route.
The last piece of the strategic jigsaw fell into place when the German defeat in WWI led to the transfer of Tanganyika (German East Africa) to Britain. There was now a continuous chain of British territory from South Africa to Egypt.
Unfortunately for the railway, the internal combustion engine was now becoming dominant. The final sections of the North-South railway across Africa were never completed.
Nowadays it is possible to enjoy luxury train travel along the route of the Cape to Cairo railway with an all-inclusive trip offered by a South African travel company - Rovos Rail. Sights visited in Southern Africa include the Cape, Pretoria, and Victoria Falls. In Egypt one will see the pyramids and the temples, and the Valley of the Kings, and there are also many opportunities to see African wild life during the trip. Accommodation is either in the train's sleeping cars, or in luxury hotels. Air travel to bridge from the southern to the northern section of the Cape to Cairo route is included.
